“The accused Sanjeev Kumar Mahajan has been arrested for murdering Pinky in presence of her husband and child in February. He was arrested near AIIMS Thursday evening,” a police officer said.

The police said the interrogation of Mahajan, 44, revealed he had an affair with the woman and had lent her money to open a beauty parlour.

“The accused revealed that he is involved in cricket betting for quite some time. He knew Pinky for one-and-a-half years when she worked in a saloon at Patel Nagar area which he used to frequent. Both were involved in an extra-marital affair,” the officer said.

“He helped Pinky in opening a beauty parlour at Patel Nagar in partnership. Pinky also borrowed a large amount of money from the accused. But when he wanted some money back she started making false excuses,” he said.

The official said: “On Feb 22, when he went to ask her for money, an argument broke out between them. Pinky’s husband and child were also with her at that time. Pinky reportedly threatened to implicate him in a false rape case. On this, he got angry and shot Pinky dead. Since then he was absconding,” the police added.

The police said a pistol, which was also the murder weapon, with six bullets was recovered from him.
