India’s passenger vehicle sales inch up

New Delhi : India’s passenger vehicle sales grew a marginal 1.68 percent in April-May to about 275,000 units from nearly 272,000 units sold in the corresponding period last year, according to an industry body.

Sales, however, dropped to a little below 141,000 units in May from about 142,000 sold in the like month last year, figures released MOnday by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said.

Total commercial vehicle sales in the period April-May fell to a little over 60,600 units from nearly 69,000 sold in the year-ago period. May sales fell from over 36,100 units last year to 30,800.

“Cumulative sales of commercial vehicles Segment continued to register de-growth. The segment grew at 13.08 percent during April-May 2009 as compared to the corresponding period last year,” said a SIAM statement.

Two-wheeler sales during the period under review rose over 13 percent to nearly 14.3 lakh units from 12.64 lakh in the corresponding period last year.
