Ghaziabad : A man wanted for over a dozen crimes was shot dead by the police in a firefight when the accused was trying to escape on a stolen motorcycle, officials said Friday.
The incident occurred Thursday night in the Indirapuram police station area, police said.
“Two men stole a motorcycle in Kavi Nagar area Thursday and the owner of the motorcycle informed the control room that that the men had fled towards Indirapuram,” Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar said.
“Checking was being conducted on all possible routes and the two men were seen coming on the motorcycle towards Vaishali bridge. When the policemen asked them to stop, they opened fire.
The policemen retaliated by firing back and one of the men sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. His accomplice managed to flee,” Kumar added.
From the documents found in his pocket the deceased was identified as Pradeep alias Fauzi, a resident of Noorpur under Babu Garh police station in Ghaziabad district. Pradeep was wanted in at least a dozen criminal cases and also carried a reward for his arrest, police said.
A motorcycle, a pistol and about a dozen live and used cartridges were recovered from his possession, police added.
