Cairo : The Egyptian Red Crescent will provide more food aid to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip for the upcoming holy fasting month of Ramadan, the official MENA news agency reported Sunday.
Contacts are underway to make arrangements for the delivery of the new batch of food, including 600 tons of flour, sugar and rice, Secretary General of the Egyptian relief body Mamdouh Gabr was quoted as saying.
In coordination with the Palestinian National Authority and Israel, the Egyptian Red Crescent will work on allowing the assistance into the Strip as soon as possible, said the report.
The Egyptian Red Crescent has engaged itself in providing relief, especially food, for the Palestinians living in Gaza.
On Aug. 13, 15 Egyptian trucks carrying 270 tons of flour crossed into the Gaza Strip, bringing the total aid offered by the Egyptian Red Crescent to some 1,500 tons of flour, rice, sugar and medical aid.
Gaza has been now facing a deeper humanitarian crisis since the takeover of the coastal strip by the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in mid-June, after which Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sacked the Hamas-led government and appointed a new one based in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
The Strip became more isolated from the entire world after all crossings and passages, which were jointly operated by Abbas’ security forces and Israel, had been shut down for more than two months.
