New Delhi : Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday said the government will try and persuade state governments and other stake holders to implement a unified goods and service tax (GST) as it had done for the central value added tax (Cenvat).
“I know there is a problem. We had a problem while implementing VAT earlier. I will try to persuade them given my persuading skills,” Mukherjee said facetiously in an interaction with industry leaders here.
The GST, expected to significantly mitigate the problem of double taxation and unify disparate markets across the country, will be rolled out April 1, 2010.
