New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islami will provide 1000 volunteers for upcoming Commonwealth Games in the National Capital in 2010. Both male and female students will be included in the Jamia team of volunteers in equal numbers.
“In response to a request from the Ministry of Youth affairs and Sports, GOI, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit at Jamia Millia Islamia has decided to send 1000 volunteers for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. These volunteers, including both male and female students in equal numbers, shall be involved in various activities related to the Games,” said Rakhshanda Jalil, Director, Media & Culture, JMI.
The NSS has initiated the enrollment drive for volunteers; the last date for registration is 11 September 2009.
The Jamia chapter of the NSS opened in 1969 and ever since then it has been an important engine of community service initiatives on the campus. Voluneers of the NSS are required to put in 120 hours of social service in one year. At present there are 3550 students enrolled with the NSS at Jamia, of which 2235 are males and 1215 females. Over the years these volunteers not only take part in community service programmes such as blood donation, tree plantation, shram daan in adopted villages and slums in the neighbourhood but also help out with large seminars and conferences on the campus such as the XXXII Social Science Congress at the Jamia held in December 2008. NSS volunteers have in the past also participated in events outside the campus such as the Asia-Pacific International Leadership Conference, Inter-Agency Sports Cultural meets, HIV AIDS Awareness Camps and Rallies, Heart Check-Up Camps, Health Melas, dental Check-up Camps, Adventure Training Programmes.
