The IC 747 flight turned into a nightmare around 3 p.m. Wednesday when, according to initial reports, the aircraft’s landing gear caught fire.

The cause of the fire was not known immediately.

Passengers were unhurt and the airport staff extinguished the fire.

Nepal’s official media said an inquiry is on to ascertain the cause of the fire.

Indian Airlines is the only airline to fly directly between Kathmandu and Kolkata.

There has been an unprecedented boom in air traffic recently, causing Indian Airlines to hike the fares it had slashed during an earlier slump when faced with stiff competition from Air Sahara and Jet Airways.
