Man under trial smuggles bombs into court

Kolkata : Driven to despair by the delay in his verdict, a man under trial smuggled two crude bombs into a court here intending to hurl them at the judge as a protest.

Ataur Rahman, lodged in Dum Dum Central jail, was arrested two years ago for alleged involvement in a murder case, but was yet to be given a verdict.

He was brought to court Wednesday along with some other prisoners. The bombs were discovered wrapped in a plastic bag around his waist when the prisoners were being frisked before being taken to the court lock up.

“It is a mystery how he had managed to smuggle the bombs into the jail and bring them into the court. We have started an investigation,” said additional superintendent of police Basab Dasgupta.

Police later found another bomb in one corner of the lock up.

Rahman later told police that he had brought the bombs out of desperation as his case had dragged on for over two years, but the judge was yet to pronounce his verdict.

Police suspect someone might have handed the bombs while he was being taken in the police van.

“Sometimes relatives pass on food to the prisoners while they are in the van by bribing the policemen on duty. In this case, someone may have handed him those bombs,” a police official said.
