Lucknow : The Azamgarh police Thursday raided the house of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Azamgarh Ramakant Yadav who is accused of murder, officials said.
A murder case was lodged against Yadav Aug 12 after a young man died in a clash between the supporters of the Ulema Council and the BJP in Phoolpur locality of Azamgarh district.
The raid was conducted at Yadav’s residence in Ambari village at around 6 p.m.
“We received information that the MP was present in his house. However, we could not nab him,” Additional Superintendent of Police Shailendra Rai told IANS by phone.
Amir Rashadi, state head of the Ulema Council, in his First Information Report has alleged that Yadav’s supporters started firing indiscriminately at his party workers after a brawl, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Abdul Rehman and injury to three others.
“We had organised a rally in the Phoolpur locality and were heading towards the venue in cars. Those accompanying Yadav, who was in a cavalcade behind us, had a brawl with some of our supporters and members,” Amir Rashadi said in his complaint.
A case under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) was registered against the MP and others in the Phoolpur police station, police said.
Over a dozen people were injured in the clash. A huge battery of police personnel have been deployed in the city to prevent any untoward incident.
The Azamgarh-based Uttar Pradesh Ulema Council, the most vocal of half a dozen Muslim political parties, emerged about six months ago after two Muslim youth of the district were shot dead by the Delhi Police in a gun battle Sep 18, 2008, in the Batla House locality of the national capital.
Over a dozen other youth were picked up subsequently by the police, and charged with being involved in anti-national activities. The council had accused the police of indiscriminately rounding up people from Azamgarh.
