Rio de Janeiro : At least nine people died and 70 were injured in a train accident in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, officials said.
The commuter train carrying 850 people crashed at high speed into an empty train in the community of Nova Iguazu Thursday evening, the operator Supervia said.
People were still trapped in the wreckage hours after the accident, many of them seriously injured, according to Pedro Marco, who was heading the rescue efforts.
Both train drivers survived the crash, according to Joao Gouveia, director of Supervia. Their information will be vital to the accident investigation, he said.
