Nairobi : At least 28 people were killed and 21 seriously injured in a grisly road accident involving a truck and three passenger vehicles in western Kenya, authorities said Friday.
The Thursday night accident, which occurred near a bridge about two kilometres from Kisii town, involved a trailer that hit vehicles ferrying passengers to Keroka town, said area police commander Augustine Kamantaria.
He said the vehicles were pushed into a river bend and reduced into mangled wreckages.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of the truck appeared to have lost control of the vehicle after he dashed down the road and hit three vehicles.
“The trailer then drove over the vehicles with the passengers trapped inside. I could hear women and children wailing,” said an eyewitness.
Road accidents are common in Kenya and the recent rise in road fatalities has been blamed on the failure of the authorities to enforce safety practices on roads.
