Left’s stand hinges on committee report: Karat

Kolkata : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat said Friday the Left parties will take a decision on the Indo-US nuclear deal based on the findings of the 14-member committee formed to examine the 123 Agreement. `

“A committee is being set up. Let the committee submit its report. Then we will decide on our future course of action,” Karat told reporters after attending the party’s meeting at CPI-M headquarters here.

He, however, said External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s statement linking the operationalisation of the nuclear deal to the findings of the committee should not be seen as a victory or defeat for any side.

On Thursday evening, Mukherjee announced in New Delhi that a joint committee of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Left representatives would look into “certain aspects of the bilateral agreement, the implications of the Hyde Act on the 123 agreement (between New Delhi and Washington) and (on) self-reliance in the nuclear sector, the implications of the nuclear agreement on foreign policy and security cooperation.

“The operationalisation of the deal will take into account the committee’s findings,” he had said after a meeting with Left leaders at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s residence.
