Armed robbers Saturday looted nearly a dozen handicapped passengers, and shot and injured one of them on the Danapur-Howrah express train in Bihar.

“The escort party was suspended and departmental action against them has been recommended,” Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar Singh said. The five policemen forming the train’s escort party were armed, as is the norm in robbery-prone Bihar.

The robbers shot and injured school teacher Vishwakarma Sharma before looting the other handicapped passengers on the train between Karauta and Bhakhtiyarpur stations near Patna.

The police have registered a complaint against eight suspects. Though no arrest has been made yet, three people have been detained for interrogation. “The railway police along with local police are conducting raids to nab the criminals,” Singh said.

“Soon after the train left Patna station, a dozen armed men, mostly youths, pretending to be passengers, boarded the special bogie for the handicapped and looted passengers at gun point,” police said.

Sharma was admitted to a hospital here, where the doctors described his condition as stable.
