“Every possible effort is being undertaken at the centre and the state level to deal with the flood situation,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singvi told reporters here.

Earlier in the day, Congress president Sonia Gandhi surveyed the flood affected areas and assured all possible help from the central government.

Singhvi said that it was a “terrible natural event” and the help of the army and navy is being taken to deal with the situation.

Expressing sympathy with those affected by the flood, Singhvi said: “Our heart goes out to those who have suffered. The entire Congress family is concerned over the tragedy.”

In Andhra Pradesh the worst floods in the Krishna river in 100 years have caused widespread devastation in five districts, killing 49 people, rendering over 400,000 homeless and damaging crops over thousands of acres.

In Karnataka, 16 districts of the state have been affected by floods. Around 1.25 lakh houses have been damaged, rendering more than two lakh people homeless. A total of 1,211 relief camps in 12 districts have been set up to shelter around 356,769 people. Around 200 people have been officially confirmed dead so far.
