New Delhi: Students and activists from across the country and abroad gathered at Delhi’s historic Red Fort Saturday and formed a human chain in the shape of a huge ‘5’ to mark a global mobilisation programme against carbon emissions.
The programme near the monument was under the banner of ‘350 Global Mobilisation Campaign’ that is aimed at spreading awareness about growing carbon content in the atmosphere.
According to experts, the maximum level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere should be 350 parts per million, which has currently risen to 387.
Besides Delhi, in Sydney a large ‘3’ was formed by activists and a human chain in the shape of a ‘0’ was formed in Copenhagen.
“It’s amazing to see the energy level that college students have shown to make this event a success. More than 750 students from across 20 colleges in Delhi are here to be a part of the campaign,” said Roselin Dey, who is the coordinator for 350 South Asia Campaigns.
Other events in the country included a clean up drive at the Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir as well as rallies in Bangalore and Mumbai.
Superintendent archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India, Muhammed K.K., said: “It’s a great opportunity for us. From a platform like Delhi, the entire nation will hear our pledge.”
