Srinagar : The Indian Army foiled an infiltration bid in the early hours of Sunday in north Kashmir’s Machil sector and gunned down four separatist guerrillas.

“Troops of 7 Gharwal Rifles noticed suspicious movement near the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district around midnight,” a defence spokesman said here.

“As the group of terrorists intruded into this side, they were surrounded by troops of Gharwal Rifles. They responded by opening fire at the troops. Security forces also retaliated and the gunfight continued for several hours,” Lt. Col. A.K. Mathur told IANS.

“Early Sunday morning, the bodies of four terrorists were recovered. The firing has stopped but searches in the jungle area are continuing,” he added.

According to the Indian Army, infiltration from across the LoC has increased in recent months compared to the corresponding period last year.
