Baghdad : A car bomb went off near an Iraqi Army checkpoint in a town south of Baghdad on Sunday, killing two people and wounding six others, including soldiers, a well-informed police source said.

“A car bomb detonated at an Iraqi Army checkpoint in the town of Mahmoudiyah, 30 km south of Baghdad, killing a soldier and a civilian and wounding two soldiers and four civilians,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The blast also damaged several civilian cars at the checkpoint, the source added.

In Baghdad, a mortar round struck the Maisaloun Square in eastern part of the capital, wounding six people, including four traffic policemen, according to the identical source.

The attacks came as the Iraqi authorities imposed tight security measures in the capital city, where delegates from neighboring countries and key international players are convening to find ways forward in ending bloodshed in the war-torn country.
