Srinagar : Dozens of people were injured in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Tuesday when protests over the killing of a youth by security forces in an alleged fake encounter turned violent.
Hundreds of protesters in Dangiwacha village, over 65 km from here, blocked roads and pelted stones at police personnel, who had to resort to baton charging and use tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
Eight policemen and nearly 25 civilians were wounded in the clashes.
Protesters alleged that Muhammad Ramzan Shah, a student, had been killed by the security forces in a fake encounter in north Kashmir’s Sherhama Marwar area of Kupwara district Monday.
“Ramzan, a student of Sopore degree college had gone to visit his aunt in Sherhama Marwar village on Sunday when he was picked up by the security forces and later killed in a fake encounter,” relatives of the slain student said.
Ramzan’s body was handed over to his relatives Monday but they refused to bury him, demanding action against those involved in the alleged murder of the youth.
Police in north Kashmir had claimed that two guerrillas had been killed in a joint operation carried out by them and troops of 30 Rashtriya Rifles Monday. Arms and ammunition were also reportedly recovered from the militants.
The slain guerrillas were identified as Muhammad Ramzan Shah, son of Abdul Salam Shah, a resident of Dangiwacha and Abu Imran Sindhi of Pakistan, according to Haseeb Mughal, superintendent of police, Handwara.
The army had also corroborated the police statement.
