Maldah: Resplendent in a green zardosi sari, Congress MP Mausam Benazir Noor, the niece of late central minister A.B.A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury, Saturday tied the knot with her long-time sweetheart Mirza Kayesh Begg at a glittering ceremony in this northern West Bengal town.
First time Lok Sabha member Mausam was all decked up in bridal jewellery at the sprawling Kotwali mansion of her family that was illuminated in all its splendour and ready to play host to around 12,000 invitees.
Looking coy, the 27-year-old law graduate said she was feeling both nervous and happy.
“I am as nervous as I was during the Lok Sabha campaign (earlier this year). At the same time, I am moved to see so many people turn up for the wedding. And the way the people are celebrating the occasion is also simply unbelievable”.
Mausam and the handsome Begg got to know each other while studying law together. He also took an active part in Mausam’s election campaigns. “She will continue with politics. I will pursue a career in law,” said Begg, a resident of Asansol in Burdwan district.
“Soniaji (Congress president Sonia Gandhi) has sent me a lovely gift. And she has also sent a handwritten note conveying her best wishes to me and my husband. This is the best gift for me,” said Mausam, whose short political career has seen her rising fast.
She became a legislator earlier this year from the family pocket borough of Sujapur after the death of her mother and Ghani Khan’s sister Ruby Noor, before winning the Lok Sabha polls from the Malda North seat.
The Khan Chowdhuries are an out and out political family. Two of Mausam’s maternal uncles are also people’s representatives. While Abu Naser Khan Chowdhury is the legislator from Sujapur, Abu Hashem Kahn Chowdhury is the Lok Sabha MP from Malda South.
A lavish reception will be held in a upscale Kolkata club Dec 13 with the invitee list including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, as also a large number of politicians from across the spectrum.
