The 28-year-old Indian student parked his taxi outside his girlfriend’s home on Collier Crescent. He then rang her on his mobile to get her to bring out his dinner when someone approached his vehicle, The Age reported.

The victim’s girlfriend heard him scream out over the phone as he was attacked, Detective Leading Senior Constable Greg Johnson was quoted as saying.

She ran outside and found her boyfriend lying outside the car. He was bleeding from a single stab wound to the chest.

Investigators are examining whether another car was involved.

There was damage to the rear of the taxi and bits of a broken front headlight were found near the scene.

“That is certainly one of the lines of inquiry we’ll be looking along, that it could be a road rage incident,” an official was quoted as saying.

The victim was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital where he is in a serious condition.
