Cape Town : Knowing that they had already booked a berth in the next round, Bangladesh tried to play careless cricket and lost by seven wickets to a far superior South Africa in a Twenty20 World Championship tie here Friday.

The result of his inconsequential Group A match at Newlands had no impact on the two advancing teams’ standing in this pool. South Africa finished atop with four points from two wins and advanced to the Super Eights and Bangladesh two from the win over the West Indies, who have crashed out.

South Africa, who won the toss, bowled out Bangladesh for 144 in 19.3 overs, with Aftab Ahmed being the top scorer with 36 (14 balls, 5x4s, 2x6s).

Most of the Bangladeshi batsmen played poor, careless shots to succumb easily to a professional opponent. Veteran pacer Shaun Pollock took three wickets.

In reply, captain Graeme Smith (34 balls, 6x4s) and Albie Morkel (29 balls, 3x4s, 2x6s) scored an identical 41 and Jean-Paul Duminy made 36 (28 balls, 4x4s, 1×6) helped South Africa home with seven balls to spare. Final total: 146 for three in 18.5 overs.

But it was South African pacer Morne Morkel who was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match for his accurate bowling. He finished with 40-0-21-2.
