Orissa lawyers strike work to protest colleague’s murder

By IANS,

Bhubaneswar: Lawyers boycotted courts across Orissa Thursday to protest the killing of a colleague in the state’s Mayurbhanj district, an official said.

Kalicharan Pradhan, 74, was killed in an attack Monday night at his village Kumbharmunda, some 400 km from here. Pradhan’s wife also suffered injuries.

The Orissa High Court Bar Association had called for a dawn-to-dusk shutdown THursday, demanding immediate arrest of Pradhan’s attackers and seeking protection for his family.

The members of the association boycotted the high court work at Cuttack. Lawyers also struck work in all lower and district courts in the state.

“Six people have been arrested in the murder case. Search is on to nab others,” a senior district police official said.
