“The Indian economy is far better positioned than a year ago. But we still have challenges to grow more than 9 percent annually as early as possible while ensuring food security and attaining high GDP growth and then find the means to cross double-digit growth,” Mukherjee said at the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) here.

“The first challenge before us is to quickly revert to the high GDP growth of 9 percent plus,” he said, addressing JMI students.

After growing at 7.9 percent in the second quarter of 2009-10 and 6.1 percent in the first quarter, India’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the third quarter dropped to 6 percent.

According to the government’s advance estimates, the GDP will climb to 7.2 percent during the entire fiscal, from 6.7 percent in 2008-09 and is expected top grow at 8.5 percent during the next fiscal year.
