Act against labour law violators at CWG sites: CPI-M

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Wednesday asked the central government to take “immediate action” against violators of human rights and labour laws at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) work sites in the national capital.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha during question hour, CPI-M member M.B. Rajesh, alleged that “an estimated one lakh families have been evicted” and their huts razed to beautify the city. The evicted people, however, have not been given alternative housing.

“There is apprehension that after the Games there will be 30 lakh homeless, including 15 lakh migrant labourers, in Delhi,” Rajesh said.

The MP also cited media reports which talked about “blatant violations of labour laws”.

“Out of the 12 lakh workforce employed by CWG organisations, only 22,000 workers are registered. The unregistered workforce are not getting minimum wages, insurance coverage and other benefits,” he said.

Rajesh also said that over 2,000 boys aged between 14 and 16 years are working at several games sites. “It is a gross violation of labour laws,” he said.

The government should take “immediate action against violators of labour laws and also ensure proper rehabilitation for the evicted people,” he said.
