More concerned about BPL than IPL, Congress asserts

By IANS,

New Delhi : The verbal spat between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued over the Indian Premier League (IPL) Wednesday, with the ruling party rebutting the allegations that it is more concerned about the glitzy cricket event than people living below poverty line (BPL).

“As far as the IPL is concerned, there is an enquiry process on. Let the law take its own course and the enquiry reach its proper conclusion,” party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters here.

“We are more concerned about BPL than IPL,” he added.

Tewari said the party’s alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra is intact.

“We have been running government in Maharashtra for the past 11 years,” Tewari said reacting to a question on Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel’s allegation that some Congress leaders were spreading a “slanderous campaign” against him on the IPL controversy.

Tewari said the NCP minister had not made any such comments.

On Shashi Tharoor’s resignation from the council of ministers following the Kochi IPL franchise row, the Congress spokesperson said: “The unfortunate controversy over Tharoor is a closed chapter.”
