Police case against Vedanti, 16 DMK men taken into custody

Chennai, Sep 25 (IANS) Police in Chennai have registered a case against religious leader Ram Vilas Vedanti of Ayodhya, who reportedly called for the beheading of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The call by Vedanti, a former Bharatiya Janata Party MP, on Friday triggered violent protests by the ruling DMK cadres across the state who demanded his arrest.

Acting on a complaint by a person named Dhananchezhian, police filed the case on Monday night. The complainant said Vedanti’s call could disturb communal harmony in Tamil Nadu.

Vendanti has been charged with “promoting enmity between various communities, committing acts prejudicial to maintaining communal harmony and making statement conducive to public mischief”, police here said.

Police have also arrested 16 DMK activists for attacks on BJP and Hindu Munnani offices here Sunday. They have been sent to judicial custody.
