Chandigarh : Punjab’s vigilance officials Thursday evening raided and opened the lockers of former director general of police (DGP) S.S. Virk in a leading private bank here.
The raid at the HDFC bank branch in Sector 8 was continuing till late in the night.
Vigilance officials said the lockers in his name and those of his family members were being searched.
The vigilance wing had Wednesday sought permission from the district and sessions court at Ropar, 45 km from here, to open the lockers of Virk and his family members. The case was listed for hearing Thursday but vigilance lawyers Thursday withdrew the application seeking permission.
The raid in the evening followed without any permission from the court.
Virk was earlier this month arrested dramatically by the vigilance wing in connection with a number of corruption cases registered against him.
Considered close to former chief minister Amarinder Singh of the Congress, Virk served as Punjab DGP till January this year. He continues to be a DGP rank officer in his parent cadre of Maharashtra.
Virk has been admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here ever since his arrest due to medical problems.
Vigilance officials have not been able to question him on charges of disproportionate assets. He has been charged of amassing property worth over Rs. 1 billion.
