Bali bomber in death row seeks presidential pardon

Jakarta, Sep 28 (Xinhua) A convicted Indonesian terrorist is making his final struggle to avoid the death sentence by requesting a presidential pardon after the Supreme Court turned down his appeal.

Amrozi was sentenced to death along with two fellow militants for the October 2002 bombings that killed 202 people on Indonesia’s Bali island.

“Amrozi is currently making legal efforts to get the presidential pardon. If this stage is passed (with the pardon denied), we can carry out the execution,” Attorney General Hendarman Supandji told reporters here.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court also turned down an appeal by Amrozi’s older brother Ali Ghufron in a similar case.

It remains unclear if the two other inmates in the death row are seeking the presidential pardon, the last effort to avoid execution.
