I am not retiring, says PM

By IANS,

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has ruled India since May 2004, said Monday that there was no question of his retirement — because he had a task to complete.

“I have been given a work and it is incomplete yet. And till I complete it, there is no question of my retirement,” he told a press conference to mark the first year of his Congress-led government’s second tenure.

Asked what legacy he would leave behind as prime minister, the 77-year-old economist-turned-politician said: “I am not really bothered about the legacy issue. These are issues…

“I have a task to accomplish. I am planning to do that to the best of my ability.”

Legacy is for historians to pronounce a judgment on, he added.

Manmohan Singh became prime minister for the first time May 22, 2004, succeeding Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Singh’s Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) returned to power in May last year after the Lok Sabha election.
