“The service will be launched initially from Rohini East Metro station this month to promote the use of bicycles as it is an eco-friendly mode of transport,” a Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) official said.

This is different from DMRC’s ‘rent a bicycle’ scheme under which bicycles are hired at some stations for short distance travel.

The new service helps commuters to reach Metro stations and return to their homes.

It will start on a trial basis with 25 cycles. Later, it will be extended to other stations.

Apart from a cycle stand at the Metro station, DMRC plans to create four cycle sub-stations.

“Commuters will be able to take the cycles from a sub-station near their residence and reach the stations. Similarly, while returning home they can deposit the cycle at the sub-stations,” the official informed.

Commuters can register for the service after paying a refundable Rs.300. A 15-minute hire will cost Rs.3.
