New Delhi : The National Commission for Women (NCW) Friday said its has formed a committee to enquire into the alleged case of a woman being forced to strip in front of her son at a west Delhi police post last month.
NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said: “I was shocked to hear of such police atrocity. We have formed a three-member enquiry committee which will probe into the circumstances leading to the incident and action taken by the authorities.”
The victim, a 30-year-old woman, approached the commission Friday.
A resident of Mayapuri slum area, the woman alleged she was forced to strip May 22 by the police in front of her 12-year-old son whom they accused of stealing money from a car.
Three constables, including a woman head constable, were Thursday suspended and an assistant sub-inspector was transferred pending an enquiry into the incident.
“Our enquiry committee, which will be headed by NCW member Wansuk Syiem, will meet the concerned officers, victims, relatives and other such persons as deemed proper to ascertain the facts and the circumstances leading to the incident,” Vyas said.
“The committee shall recommend remedial measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” she added.
Earlier in the day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said it will issue notice to the Delhi Police commissioner and possibly to the Delhi chief secretary over the matter.
