Gangster gunned down in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : A gangster wanted in over 20 criminal cases, including murder and abduction, was gunned down in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district but his aide escaped, police said Friday.

Akbar Khan, 35, who carried a reward of Rs.50,000 for his capture, was shot dead late Thursday during a gun battle with the police in Zafrabad area, some 250 km from here.

“While carrying out the routine vehicle checking drive, we stopped Akbar Khan and his aide, who were on a motorcycle. The duo started firing at us,” police inspector Ramesh Yadav told reporters in Jaunpur.

“We responded. After around an hour of gun battle, he (Khan) was shot dead,” Yadav added.

“A policeman was also injured. Teams have been constituted to nab the aide who escaped due to darkness,” he added.

Over 22 criminal cases, including for murder and abduction, are pending against him in Uttar Pradesh.
