Mandangi Subbarao, a resident of Kondabaredi village, committed suicide by hanging himself inside a room in the office building of the anti-Maoist cell in the Rayagada district headquarter, some 390 km from here. He was staying there since Aug 1.

“He used to fear for his life as Maoists had branded him a police informer. He appeared to be tense about this,” Superintendent of Police Anoop Krishna told IANS.

Subbarao committed suicide when his roommate, who is a policeman, had gone outside the room, Krishna said.

During the last week of July, Maoists took Subbarao to a nearby jungle area and assaulted him. They let him off after threatening him and since then Subbarao was in constant fear, Krishna said.
