Iftar in an American masjid

Drive past farm-lands and old houses to arrive at Sharon Masjid or Islamic Center of New England in Sharon, Massachusetts. Nestled among trees it is a beautiful two-story masjid situated on a hill-top. First floor has place for making wudu and bathrooms while the top floor is musalla and also doubles up as a meeting hall.

Special care has been taken to keep the youth involved with a full basketball court and a weekend Islamic school on the premises.

I arrived about half an hour before iftar time to see kids playing basketball, women reading quran or talking to their friends, and men busy at work preparing for iftar and maghrib prayers.

Men busy preparing dinner packets.

Dinner-packets ready to be consumed. Biryani, chicken, salad, and raita in each packet.

With two parking lots full, ten year old Hasan directs traffic to the overflow parking.

Close to Maghrib time, people line up for iftar. Africans, Americans, Arabs, Indians, Pakistanis all in one line.

With iftar in hand, men wait patiently for Maghrib azan.

Time for maghrib prayer.

Young ones still praying while older people lined up for dinner packets.
