26 killed in bus-train collision in Cuba

By Xinhua

Havana : A passenger bus on Saturday collided with a train in southeastern Cuba, killing at least 26 and injuring 71, a local official from the transportation department told Xinhua.

The accident took place in the town of Yara, in Granma Province, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) southeast off Havana. The train that left from Cuba’s second largest city Santiago de Cuba was heading for Manzanillo in Granma province.

Among the 71 injured, 15 are in critical conditions, officials said.

The bus’s failure to observe the signal light at the rail crossing may have caused the accident that was the deadliest in years in Cuba, according to reports by local media.

The latest major traffic accident in Cuba happened in June, when at least 11 people, including five children, were killed and 50 others were injured as an overloaded coach flipped over an exploded tire.
