Abbas, Netanyahu hold direct talks in Jerusalem

By IANS,

Jerusalem : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Wednesday held direct negotiations in Jerusalem after their talks in the Egyptian coastal resort of Sharm el-Sheikh the day before.

The talks, in the presence of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Middle East envoy George Mitchell, were held at the Israeli prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem.

Earlier in the day, Clinton separately met with Netanyahu and Israeli President Shimon Peres. She also met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in Jerusalem.

Netanyahu and Abbas “are getting down to business. They have begun to grapple with the core issues that can only be resolved through face-to-face negotiations”, Clinton said after meeting with Peres.
