A group of people armed with dynamite and guns abducted the Indians from oil city of Port Harcourt after a pre-dawn attack on the residential complex of an Indonesian firm, according to information received here.

They initially tried to capture 10 employees of the firm, but security forces took quick action and were able to free seven of them. One Nigerian was killed in the operation.

However, they fled with three Indians and reportedly sent a ransom demand.

Abductions of foreign nationals working in the oil industry in the Niger Delta by militants as well as criminals have been on the rise since early 2006.

Saturday's incident takes to 15 the number of foreign workers held hostage in the oil-rich region.
