Railways’earnings up by 7.83 percent in first half of fiscal

New Delhi : The Indian Railways Wednesday said it earned a revenue of Rs.44,323.70 crore in the first half of this fiscal, registering a growth of 7.83 percent over the corresponding period last fiscal when it had earned Rs.41,104.78 crore.

While the revenue by passenger movement went up by 9.64 percent, the earnings by freight movement rose by 6.57 percent. The earnings by miscellaneous activities rose by 10.10 percent, said a railway ministry statement.

Between April 1-Sep 30 this year, the railways earned a freight revenue of Rs.29,443.32 crore as compared to Rs.27,629.01 crore for the corresponding period last year.

Similarly, the railways’ earned a revenue of Rs.12,689.36 crore through passenger movement and Rs.1,234.89 crore thorough its miscellaneous activities during the first half of 2010-11 fiscal, compared to Rs.11,573.60 crore and Rs.1,121.64 crore on the two counts respectively.

The ministry statement the railways carried approximately 3,904.57 million passengers, compared to 3,683.53 million during the first six months of last year, registering a 6 percent increase in passenger movement.
