Fennell, however, declined to disclose the name, but hinted that the athlete was a female and tested positive for banned steroid nandrolone.

The Indian is the third athlete to test positive for drugs. Earlier, two Nigerian players tested positive.

“As per the anti-doping practice, we are not declaring the name now. We can only reveal that it is in athletics and an Indian,” he said.

“We have collected 1300 samples and Tuesday we got another positive result. We cannot disclose the name of the athlete. We have served notice to the athlete and also the chef de mission,” said Fennell.

“We have served notice to Indian chef de mission at 9 a.m and we are expecting a reply by afternoon. We can only reveal the name after the athlete receives the notification but we have not got any confirmation whether the athlete has received the notice or not,” he said.

But he declined to say whether the athlete won medal or not during the competition.

“I think three out of 1300 players failed dope test and it is not a bad record. In two previous cases, it was not considered serious as it was a stimulant. But the Indian athlete tested positive for a steroid,” he said.

Organising Committee secretary general Lalit Bhanot, who is also the secretary-general of Athletics Federation of India (AFI), said it was an unfortunate incident.

“It is unfortunate. We tried our best to prevent such instances. The government was serious about it even during the trials and other events. It is a difficult situation if one uses forbidden substance to enhance performance,” he said.
