Dhaka : Bangladeshi Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus has found a new aide in his mission to serve the country’s poor — his soprano daughter Monica who helped collect $200,000 through a concert in New York’s Times Square.
The money would go to help Bangladesh’s destitute children, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) news agency said.
Among the 200 mostly American invitees at the event was Cherie Blair, wife of former British prime minister Tony Blair, who flew in for the fund-raising concert.
There was pin-drop silence as Monica sang: “Ami Banglar Gaan Gai (I sing the song of Bengal)”.
“Today’s world needs kind people like Dr Yunus very much, people who can sacrifice their lives to make other people happy,” Blair said at the function organised by Grameen Foundation, US.
Congratulating former US vice president Al Gore on his winning the Nobel peace prize and the Nobel committee for recognising his work, Yunus said: “Bangladesh is one of the countries which are going to be the worst sufferers from climate change and global warming.
“As a result of this, 20 percent area of Bangladesh may go under water and millions of people will face disaster.”
