Guangzhou : Boxer Dinesh Kumar assured India of a medal as he entered the semi-finals of the men’s 81kg event with a 10-6 win over South Korea’s Jinho Heo in the Asian Games here Friday.
Jinho bagged the first point of the match, but after the end of the first round Dinesh led 5-2. In the second round, Dinesh displayed some excellent defence and scored three points in counter-attack while the Korean managed just two. An aggressive Jinho rained punches on Dinesh, but most were off-target.
After the second round, Dinesh opened up a four point lead and it was difficult for the Korean to catch up. In the final round, both the boxers managed two points each and the Indian was declared the winner at the Foshan Gymnasium. In the semi-finals, Dinesh will face Nepal’s Deepak Maharjan.
Vikash Krishnan also made it to the quarterfinals of the 60kg category with an 8-1 win over Turkmenistan’s Aman Hudaybergenov. In the quarterfinals, Vikash will face North Korea’s Chol Song Kim.
