Delhi Police do not help stop illegal construction: MCD

By IANS,

New Delhi : The blame game continues even four days after the east Delhi building collapse. A senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official Friday blamed Delhi Police for not providing enough force to the civic body in its campaign to stop encroachments and spread of unauthorised buildings.

“Whenever Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) chalks out an action plan against illegal encroachments or constructions, it has to be communicated to the Station House Officer (SHO) but they never cooperate with us,” Jagdish Mamgain, chairman of the works committee of the MCD, said in a statement here Friday.

Mamgain also asked the new commissioner of Delhi Police to hold a vigilance enquiry on the role of local policemen in the illegal constructions.

“Sometimes it has been complained that the beat constable passes on information of possible action in exchange for money from the encroachers, and when the MCD team arrives at the site along with the police they find nothing there,” he alleged.

He also stated that the Supreme court has clearly issued a direction to Delhi Police to maintain status quo after the demolition or removal action is taken by the MCD against illegal activities.

The collapse of the illegal five-storey building in an east Delhi colony Monday left 69 people dead and 82 injured, and rendered many homeless.
