“The United States condemns the violent attack in Pakistan and mourns the loss of innocent life there,” U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

“Extremists will not be allowed to stop Pakistanis from selecting their representatives through an open and democratic process,” Johndroe said.

According to media reports, two bombs exploded early Friday near the vehicle carrying Bhutto on her return to Pakistan after eight years in exile, killing at least 80 people and wounding some100 others. However, Bhutto was safe from the blasts.

Bhutto is expected to seek the premiership for an unprecedented third time in Pakistan’s upcoming elections in January.
