Sensex down 73 points in afternoon trade

Mumbai : A benchmark index of Indian equities was ruling weak in afternoon trade Wednesday. Broader markets too saw some selling amid dull cues from other Asian bourses.

The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,791.22 points, was ruling at 19,725.97 – down 73.22 points or 0.37 percent from its previous close of 19,799.19.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-share S&P CNX Nifty was trading at 5,913.55 – down 0.51 percent.

Broader markets too came under selling pressure, with the BSE midcap index ruling 0.6 percent down and the BSE smallcap index trading 0.55 percent lower.

IT and telecom scrips rallied, while banking, realty and consumer durable scrips came under selling pressure.

Among major gainers of the Sensex were Bharti Airtel, Reliance Com, Infosys and Sterlite Industries, while DLF, SBI, ICICI Bank and Cipla were among the losers.

The market breadth was negative, with 1,120 stocks advancing, compared to 1,596 scrips on the decline, while 100 stocks were unchanged.

Other Asian markets were also in a slump. The Japanese Nikkei closed flat at 10,309.78 points.

The Shanghai Composite Index was ruling 0.54 percent lower at 2,911.41, while the Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was trading 1.79 percent lower at 23,011.58.
