Coal exporter abducted in Meghalaya

By IANS,

Shillong : A man exporting coal to Bangladesh has been abducted in Meghalaya by two unidentified men, police said Friday.

No ransom call has so far been received by his family.

“Rimudu Sutnga was abducted by two unidentified men about 6 p.m. last (Thursday) night from a coal depot at Warima area,” South Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar told IANS.

Kumar said Sutnga’s family members had informed the police about his suddenly going missing.

Last month, Garo National Liberation Army, a rebel group operating in the Garo Hills area, killed two migrant coal miners and attacked a petrol pump in the district.

The GNLA had earlier slapped extortion demands ranging from Rs.5 lakh to Rs.1 crore on petrol pump owners, coal dealers and businessmen in the coal-rich districts of the Garo Hills.

The GNLA is fighting for a sovereign “Garoland” in western Meghalaya.
