Chennai: A committee of the Tamil Nadu government Monday gave its nod for a Rs.1,295 crore (about $280 million) drinking water project for Vellore district.
The committee chaired by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin met here and gave the green signal to the project in the district, around 125 km from here.
The project will use the Cauvery river water as the source in the Mettur Dam to benefit around 1.9 million people.
According to the government, 90 percent of the project cost would be met from long term loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation. The rest would be given as subsidy by the state government.
The project work will commence once the state government gives its sanction.
