Jamiat Ulama leaders meet Sonia on Muslim reservation

By TCN News,

New Delhi: Intensifying their campaign for Muslim reservation, a high-level delegation of Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind (JUH) met Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi at her residence on 7th January 2011 and demanded her to act upon her party’s promise to provide quota to the most backward religious minority in the country.

In her response, Mrs Gandhi assured the delegation that her party is determined for the welfare of the Muslim community and for this it will consider reservation for them. “We are committed towards that, therefore we had placed it in our election manifesto,” she said.

It should be noted here that JUH had launched the nationwide satyagraha in May 2010 demanding adequate reservation for Muslims and amendment in the present form of Communal Violence Prevention Bill before it gets passed in Parliament. But after the assurance from Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi to consider the demands, the movement was postponed for a period of six months.

However, even after elapse of a period of more than seven months, nothing positive came from the government especially with regard to reservation for Muslims though a positive step was taken in the form of redrafting of the communal violence prevention bill.

After meeting Sonia on 7th Jan, JUH General Secretary and MP Maulana Mahmood Madani expressed hope for something positive from the government on Muslim quota count. “We have given her one month deadline and if after a month of this reminder, no positive steps are taken by the government then our organization will be compelled to
resume the nationwide agitation” said Maulana Madni.

Besides Mahmood Madani the JUH delegation had Maulana Qari Mohd Usman, JUH President, Mahesh Bhatt, social activist, Kamal Farooqui, Ex. Chairman, Delhi Minority Commission, Maulana Mahmood A. Madani, M.P. and JUH general secretary, Hafiz Peer Shabbir, Maulana Siddiqullah Chaudhry, JUH West Bengal, Advocate Shakil Ahmed Syed and others.
