Kolkata : Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee discussed the law and order situation in West Bengal with Congress heavyweight Pranab Mukherjee here and the formation of an alliance ahead of the assembly polls later this year.

Banerjee, the union railway minister, and Mukherjee, the finance minister, held talks Sunday night.

“Whenever we get time, we talk between ourselves either in Kolkata or in Delhi. It is just one such meeting,” said Banerjee after coming out of Finance Minister Mukherjee’s south Kolkata residence.

“However, yes, I briefed him about the incident at Netai village. I told him about my experiences in Netai Friday,” said Banerjee.

Seven people were shot dead and 17 wounded Thursday in violence triggered by assailants allegedly backed by the state’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the village close to the Maoist hub of Lalgarh in West Midnapore district.

The bloodbath has drawn sharp protests across the state and both Mukherjee and union Law and Justice Minister M. Veerappa Moily Sunday expressed concern over the law and order situation in the state.
