Germany summons Libyan ambassador over deadly popular protests

Berlin : German Foreign Ministry here Monday summoned Libya’s Ambassador Jamal El-Barag to protest ongoing brutal crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.

The German foreign ministry coordinator for the Middle East and Maghreb states reiterated Berlin’s stance on the Libyan conflict, saying the deadly clampdown of Libyan security forces on peaceful demonstrators was not acceptable and had to end immediately.

He also stressed that the right of freedom of opinion and the right to assemble had to be safeguarded in the North African country.

Earlier in the day, the German government ‘condemned in the strongest possible terms’ Libya’s lethal repression of popular protests.

Talking to the press in Berlin, a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was ‘shocked over the great brutality’ displayed by the Libyan security forces.
