Islamabad : Security forces and militants exchanged fire in North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan Thursday, a day after the federal government sent a large reinforcement to the troubled area.
Security forces engaged the militants after they blew up the newly established Kanju check post at the Ayub bridge in Swat valley of NWFP, Dawn News channel reported.
There was no immediate word from the government on casualties.
The security forces had deployed around 2,500 troops in Swat valley in a bid to curb militancy in the area Wednesday. They had set up new check posts to prevent militants from terrorising local civilians.
Attacks on security forces were on the rise in northwestern Pakistan after local militants in North Waziristan scrapped a peace deal with the government in mid-July.
